Our Take
The Importance of Early Diagnosis:
Encourage your pediatrician to start screening your child at 12 months old. If the screening reveals signs of autism and/or if you identify red flags in your childβs development, trust your instincts (even as a first-time parent) and schedule a diagnostic appointment with a specialist as soon as possible.
A diagnosis is possible as early as 18 months old but the wait to see a diagnostician can range from 12-24 months. You know your child best. Trust yourself and seek out a specialist if you are getting pushback from your PCP.
Children present high levels of neuroplasticity allowing for considerable brain development and learning potential via appropriate treatment. An early diagnosis can help alter the neurodevelopmental trajectory of your child. With expert treatment and proper support, a family will better understand the childβs functioning and be able to readjust the relationship.
